ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SUMMER COURSE
PARTICIPANTS //

Kemic Courses in the Pharmaceutical Sciences
Summer 2012, Wolfville, Nova Scotia
As in previous years, the
venue for
Kemic's various summer course offerings is the
campus of ACADIA
UNIVERSITY in Wolfville,
NS. About an hour's drive from the
Halifax Stanfield International
Airport, Wolfville is a charming university town
in Nova Scotia's
scenic and historic Annapolis Valley.
VENUE //
----------------------------------------
Acadia, founded in 1838, is regarded as Canada's
leading, and most
innovative, primarily undergraduate university
(Maclean's
survey). Many prominent scientists, including
Charles Huggins, the 1967
Nobel Prize laureate in medicine, are Acadia
alumni.
Wolfville is widely acclaimed for its fine
restaurants and elegant inn
dining rooms. The town is also home to
Canada's "painter
laureate", Alex Colville, a past Chancellor of
Acadia University.
The Annapolis Valley is renowned for its beauty,
agricultural produce
and historic sites. Port Royal, the site of
the first permanent
European settlement (1605) in North America, lies
65 miles west of
Wolfville.
In the opposite direction is the WINDSOR
home
of Thomas C. Haliburton, the Nova Scotia
Supreme Court Judge and
satirist whose fictional character, "Sam Slick",
was popular on both
sides of the Atlantic in the mid 19th
century. Fort Edward (where
Flora MacDonald of Bonnie Prince Charlie fame
wintered) and prestigious
Kings-Edgehill, the oldest (1788) independent
school in Canada, are
also in Windsor. Nearer Wolfville are the
world's highest tides
(Bay of Fundy) and the National Park at Grand Pre,
site of the
expulsion of the Acadians - the infamous 1755
event immortalized in
Longfellow's epic poem "Evangeline".
Nearby are nine wineries producing some of the
best wines in North America. (See: http://www.winesofnovascotia.ca/wineries/index.php) Of
course, fresh Bay of Fundy lobsters are readily
available not far away in the quaint fishing
village of Hall's Harbour.
