Fundamentals Of Pharmacology

This unique foundation course is popular with both those who have no formal training in pharmacology as well as those wishing to review or update their knowledge of the subject.

THE COURSE IN CONTEXT

With the obvious exception of pharmacists, physicians and pharmacologists, many pharmaceutical industry (and government) professionals have received no formal university-level instruction in pharmacology prior to their current employment. Although industry personnel may receive extensive mission (product-) orientated training in-house, there are occasions where a more comprehensive knowledge of pharmacology would be desirable.

The findings from basic pharmacological studies conducted in animals, both in vivo and in vitro, determine the basis for conducting clinical trials and also provide an indication of possible adverse effects. For pharmaceutical industry professionals, a broader understanding of pharmacology is essential given that regulatory authorities require preclinical investigations be conducted to delineate both a drug’s specific (i.e. targeted or therapeutic) and general (collateral) effects.

Participants in this course will receive a sound grounding in current pharmacological science with an emphasis on the drug development process. The course will be taught in an informal, interactive way with a short ‘quiz’ near the end of each learning block so that individualized tutorials can be provided on topics or points not well grasped.
